Rally Cross: Gettin' Dirty

The 2024 KWRC Rally Cross Series was an unforgettable experience. Hosted at the Eagles Nest, a small dirt track, the five-event series presented a unique challenge for all competitors.

In collaboration with the track owner, KWRC (Kitchener Waterloo Rally Club) designed a challenging course featuring a variety of obstacles, including hairpins, slaloms, off-camber corners, and blind crests.

Drivers compete individually against the clock, typically with five attempts to navigate the course. Each attempt involves two laps. The driver with the fastest combined time across all runs emerges victorious, demanding both speed and consistency to minimize lap times and secure the top spot.

This entry-level rally competition welcomes a wide range of vehicles. No special modifications are required; drivers simply need a helmet and a car they don't mind pushing to its limits.

As a result, the field boasts a diverse array of vehicles, from impressive daily drivers to "clapped-out" wrecks brought in specifically for the event.

The region typically experiences dry summer conditions, and 2024 was no exception. The May opener was an outlier, with teams battling muddy conditions. Lap times improved as cars churned the track, gradually drying the surface. While AWD vehicles had the advantage, it didn't deter any team's efforts, and the drivers clearly relished the challenge.

Dry, dusty conditions prevailed for the remainder of the season, creating dramatic scenes with dust plumes trailing the cars as they drifted past.

The entire season was a hard-fought battle among all drivers. Track side, I captured the raw talent while witnessing exciting moments of drifting, unexpected encounters with loose dirt, and exhilarating high-speed attacks. The energy was electric, and the action was non-stop.

Gear up for excitement!

The KWRC Rally Cross returns to the Eagles Nest on May 10, 2025.
Don't miss the action!
