When Winter Lingers: Voyageurs on Hold, Rally Cross Promises Spring Thaw Thrills
If you were eagerly anticipating the roar of engines while cars were sliding on gravel at the Rally of the Voyageurs, Mother Nature had other plans.
As many in central Ontario can attest, a significant ice storm swept through the region, leaving a trail of downed trees, power outages, and unfortunately, a delayed rally schedule.
The impact on the local communities, coupled with reports of washouts and road damage along the intended stages, left the KWRC rally club with no choice but to postpone the rally.
Mark your calendars anew, rally fans! The Rally of the Voyageurs has been rescheduled for May 10th. While the six-week delay is undoubtedly a disappointment for teams eager to race, it’s a necessary measure to ensure the safety of competitors, spectators, and the integrity of the event itself. For some teams, this revised date marks their season debut, adding an extra layer of anticipation.
Fortunately the action isn't entirely on hold! The KWRC is keeping the motorsport spirit alive and well with their 2025 Rally Cross series. Next weekend, on April 19th, teams will have the opportunity to shake off the rust at the official test day. Precisely what it sounds like – a chance for drivers and navigators to get back in the groove, fine-tune their machines, and familiarize themselves with the terrain before the competitive season kicks off.
Speaking of terrain, KWRC President Martin Loveridge has provided an update on the Rally Cross track. While the spring thaw is underway and the ground is drying, he noted that it's currently a little rough. Rest assured, the club is hard at work ensuring the track is in prime condition for the upcoming events. Adding to the excitement, a new track configuration promises a longer and potentially more challenging stage for the Rally Cross competitors this year!
So, while we’ll have to wait a little longer for the full-fledged stage rally action of the Voyageurs, dirt will certainly be flying next weekend as the Teams hit the track during test day, leading up to the Rally Cross Season Opener on May 3rd.
